Martin H. Greenberg

PG13- After the King (v)

-------------------

Introduction

Martin Greenberg has edited or helped edit well over 100 anthologies (Amazon gives 637 matches, including reprints) in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, horror, comics, etc. He appears to be well-established in the industry, and has the power to get very good writers for his books. While I can't guarentee that all his projects are great, he generally has a good reputation.

Edited Anthologies

After the King is a collection of fantasy stories in honor of Tolkien. Contributors include an all-star cast of fantasy favorites, such as Stephen R. Donaldson, Terry Pratchett, Robert Silverberg, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Poul and Karen Anderson, John Brunner, Patricia A. McKillip, Harry Turtledove, Andre Norton, Charles De Lint, Denise L. McKiernan, Emma Bull, Karen Haber, Peter S. Beagle, Mike Resnick, Jane Yolen, Barry N. Malzberg, Gregory Benford, and Judith Tarr.

With heavy-weights like that, it's hard to create a bad book, but Greenberg outdoes himself with an excellent collection that has a consistant tone of reminiscience while maintaining the original authors' styles. Several of these stories are the best I've seen from the authors in question (see, for example, Emma Bull's "Silver or Gold"). A variety of classic fantasy themes are worked in unusual ways, such as following the latter days of Cohen the Barbarian (Terry Pratchett, so yes, the pun is intended). If you love fantasy, you'll love this incredible book.
